What is the “Statement descriptor” in Stripe?

Πληρωμές & Χρέωση, Πωλητές

The statement descriptor is the name or short text that may appear on your customer’s bank or card statement when they pay you through Stripe.

For example, if your business is called Maria Flowers, you could use:

MARIA FLOWERS

This helps customers recognise the payment and reduces the chance that they dispute the transaction because they do not recognise the charge.

What should I enter?

Enter a short, clear version of your business name.

Good examples:

  • MARIA FLOWERS
  • NICOSIA CAKES
  • ANDREAS PHOTO
  • LARNACA GIFTS
  • MY SHOP

Use a name that your customers will recognise.

Stripe requirements

Your statement descriptor must:

  • Be 5–22 characters long
  • Include at least one letter
  • Use only letters, numbers, spaces, full stops, and hyphens
  • Use Latin/English characters only
  • Not include special symbols such as < > ' " *

Stripe may reject the descriptor if it does not meet its requirements.

Important: do not use Greek characters

Stripe requires Latin characters for the statement descriptor. Do not enter your business name in Greek.

For example, instead of:

ΑΝΘΟΠΩΛΕΙΟ ΜΑΡΙΑ

Use:

MARIA FLOWERS

Why does Stripe ask for this?

Stripe asks for this because banks and card networks need information that helps customers understand who charged them. A clear statement descriptor can help prevent customer confusion, payment disputes, and chargebacks.

What if I am not sure what to write?

Use the simplest recognisable version of your business name.

For example:

  • If your business is Maria’s Flower Boutique, use MARIA FLOWERS
  • If your business is Andreas Photography Studio, use ANDREAS PHOTO
  • If your business is Nicosia Handmade Gifts, use NICOSIA GIFTS

Keep it short, clear, and easy for customers to recognise.
